CV formatting for executive search

How executive search teams can turn long senior CVs into concise, confidential client presentations.

Search

Interim operations director for a scale-up after a funding round

Candidate

Twenty-year CV with consulting, operations, and transformation roles mixed together

Score use

Use matching to separate must-have operating experience from nice-to-have consulting work

Submission result

A confidential profile that explains why this person fits the mandate

The goal is a shortlist profile

Executive CVs often have the opposite problem of junior CVs. There is too much good material, and not all of it matters for the mandate.

The submission should explain why the candidate fits this client, this stage, and this problem. A raw chronology rarely does that well.

  • Lead with mandate fit
  • Summarize scope before listing responsibilities
  • Keep confidential details under control
  • Remove old detail that does not help the shortlist decision

Use scoring as a review layer

Matching and scoring can help you spot the parts of a senior CV that map to the mandate. For example, scale-up experience, transformation work, sector exposure, or people leadership.

Use that as a review layer. Then decide what belongs in the client-facing version and what should stay in your notes.

Keep the template senior and controlled

For executive search, branding should be quiet. A clean logo, restrained color, and consistent section order usually beat a busy template.

If you share anonymized profiles before introduction, make the redaction obvious and consistent. The client should understand the candidate without getting enough detail to bypass you.

Workflow

  1. 1Upload the CV and role mandate
  2. 2Review score, rationale, and gaps
  3. 3Decide what stays confidential
  4. 4Rewrite the profile around mandate fit
  5. 5Export a restrained branded profile
